What is Street Works Training?

Operatives and supervisors working on highways must operate in compliance with the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA), the legal framework for the industry. Our Street Works training courses are line with NRSWA standards and accredited by CABWI.

Providing delegates with a firm foundation in street works, the training covers a wide range of duties, from excavation in the highway to reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways. Upon completion of Street Works training, candidates may be issued with a Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR) card.

NRSWA Units for Supervisors (S1-S7)
Course Overview:
  • S1 – Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding.
  • S2 – Monitoring excavation in the highway.
  • S3 – Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials.
  • S4 – Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and road base non-bituminous materials.
  • S5 – Monitoring reinstatement of bituminous materials.
  • S6 – Monitoring reinstatement of concrete slabs.
  • S7 – Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways.
NRSWA Cable Avoidance (LA)
Course Overview:
  • LA: Location and avoidance of underground apparatus.
  • Relevant Health and Safety legislation.
  • Understanding site plans and hazard avoidance.
  • Safe systems of work and digging practices.
  • Pre-use tests, maintenance and operational techniques for equipment.
NRSWA Units for Operatives (O1-O8)
Course Overview:
  • O1 – Signing, lighting and guarding.
  • O2 – Excavation in the highway.
  • O3 – Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials.
  • O4 – Reinstatement of sub-base and road base non-bituminous materials.
  • O5 – Reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials.
  • O6 – Reinstatement of hot-lay bituminous materials.
  • O7 – Reinstatement of concrete slabs.
  • O8 – Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways.

Street Works training courses usually run once a month. To see upcoming course dates, visit the ATS Group website.

The Street Works courses that cover multiple NRSWA units generally run over 5 days, but one-day courses are available for some individual units.

No prior qualifications are needed to take Street Works training courses, but job experience is beneficial, especially when taking Supervisor units.

The SQA certificate and SWQR ID card issued upon successful completion of the course is valid for 5 years.
